AP government attaches fresh AgriGold properties over depositor funds
A company called AgriGold collected a lot of money from many people, promising them big profits or plots of land in return.
It collected about Rs 6,380 crore from around 32 lakh depositors, many of whom were from low-income families.
Later, the company did not return the money and did not give the promised land.
The police, called the CID, investigated and found that the money was spent to buy properties in the names of company directors and their relatives.
So the state government used a special law to take control of buildings and land connected to the company.
The new order attaches more properties, including some in Vijayawada and some in Karnataka.
The government says this is to protect the depositors and stop the company from hiding assets.
Officials have been told to make sure these properties cannot be sold or transferred.
The police also say the company and its directors cannot refund the deposits, so the attachment keeps the assets safe for now.
The Andhra Pradesh government issued ad-interim orders attaching additional AgriGold properties under the Andhra Pradesh Protection of Depositors of Financial Establishments Act, 1999.
The CID alleges AgriGold Farm Estates India Pvt. Ltd. and its group companies collected Rs 6,380 crore from around 32 lakh depositors, mainly from low-income sections.
The company allegedly failed to refund deposits or register promised plots and diverted depositors' money to sister concerns.
Freshly attached assets include properties in the name of Yella Jaya Lakshmi, mother-in-law of AgriGold joint managing director Avva Hema Sundara Vara Prasad alias Raja.
Another 3.32 guntas in Bengaluru district, Karnataka were allegedly bought with depositors' money by company directors and N Mamatha, wife of director Chinnapa Srinivasa Reddy.
