Kolkata Metro Saves Millions with Regenerative Braking Technology
Imagine trains that can use their brakes to create electricity!
That's what Kolkata Metro is doing.
Instead of wasting energy as heat, the trains now use a system called regenerative braking to turn the energy from braking into electricity.
This helps power the trains, lights, and air conditioning.
It has saved a lot of money, and reduced pollution.
Kolkata Metro is also setting up a big battery system to store even more energy and plans to become even greener.
Kolkata Metro saved over INR 8 crore in energy costs using regenerative braking in 2024-25.
Regenerative braking has helped regenerate around 1.08 crore units of electricity.
Carbon emissions were reduced by 13,500 tonnes due to the technology.
37 rakes currently use regenerative braking, converting kinetic energy back to electricity.
A 4 MW Advanced Chemical Cell (ACC) Battery Energy Storage System is set to be operational by mid-July.
