Houthi Offensive Expands Along Yemen Coast Toward Bab el-Mandeb
The Houthis are carrying out a new offensive in Yemen.
They have used ballistic missiles and drones.
Their actions near the Saudi border are not completely new.
The bigger change is that they are expanding along Yemen’s western coast.
They are moving toward a narrow waterway called the Bab el-Mandeb.
This waterway is important for ships traveling between major bodies of water.
If the Houthis gain more territory there, they could have greater control around the waterway.
The Houthis are backed by Iran.
The latest Houthi offensive is not the group’s first movement toward the Saudi border.
The Houthis have used ballistic missiles and drones in their offensive.
The more significant development is the group’s expansion along Yemen’s western coastline.
The coastal advance is moving toward the Bab el-Mandeb maritime chokepoint.
The expansion could give the Iran-backed movement greater control over territory surrounding the waterway.
