Sagar Hooch Tragedy Revives Madhya Pradesh Prohibition Demand

A number of people in Sagar, Madhya Pradesh, became seriously ill or died after drinking illegal liquor.

Reports say 28 people died, but the official count is 16.

The tragedy has renewed demands to ban alcohol across the state.

Former chief minister Uma Bharti supported women who damaged liquor shops during protests.

She said this kind of protest could help stop alcohol sales.

Bharti also said local elected leaders should have known about illegal liquor and told police.

A National Human Rights Commission team visited affected villages.

The team spoke with families of people who died.
