Courts Protect Students’ Right to Protest Against State Overreach

Students protested about exam paper leaks and workers’ issues.

Some government officials took legal action against protesters.

The Supreme Court of India cancelled a notice against one student.

The Allahabad High Court cancelled serious security charges against another student.

The High Court also ordered compensation for the student.

The courts said the government should not use broad or unclear rules to frighten people away from protesting.

People may not use protests to cause violence or vandalism.

But in a democracy, people should still be able to criticize those in power.
