India’s Power Shortage Surges as Weak Monsoon Squeezes Hydropower

India is facing a bigger electricity shortage than it had during the summer heat waves.

This is happening partly because weak monsoon rains have reduced the amount of electricity made by dams.

Hydropower production fell by 12% in the first three weeks of September.

Coal plants are making more electricity to fill the gap.

Their output increased by 18% this month.

However, many coal plants are running low on fuel.

About 40% of the plants surveyed had less than one-quarter of the coal they needed.

Officials and analysts say coal shipments and railway wagons must increase to avoid a more serious problem.
