Tamil Nadu Expands Free Bus Travel for Women
Tamil Nadu has expanded a program that lets women ride many state buses for free.
Transgender people are also included in the benefit.
Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay launched the expanded program on October 2, which is Gandhi Jayanti.
The program is called Vettri Payanam, meaning “victorious journey.”
It now includes ordinary, express, limited-stop, deluxe, and some hill-area buses.
Women do not need to meet an income requirement to use it.
They can also take as many eligible trips as they need each day.
The government says the program will help about 84 to 85 lakh women daily.
Some reports list 12,692 buses, while another lists 12,695.

Expansion or rebranding
Government and Supporters
The government describes Vettri Payanam as a significant expansion that allows women to use express, limited-stop, deluxe, and other covered services instead of being restricted mainly to ordinary city buses.
Opposition Critics
The opposition Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam has described the initiative as mainly a renaming or rebranding of its earlier Vidiyal Payanam Thittam.
Passenger convenience
Government and Supporters
Supporters say women can board the first eligible bus arriving at a stop rather than waiting for an ordinary or “white board” bus, helping them reach destinations on time.
Opposition Critics
Critics maintain that the earlier scheme already provided the core free-travel benefit, making the change less substantial than the government claims.
Social and economic impact
Government and Supporters
The government says removing fare, income, and daily-trip barriers will improve access to education, healthcare, employment, livelihoods, and social participation.
Opposition Critics
The articles report the rebranding criticism but do not provide a separate opposition assessment of the scheme’s projected social or economic benefits.
