Israel Reopens Zikim Crossing Permanently for Gaza Aid
Imagine a special gate, called the Zikim Crossing, that lets important supplies into Gaza.
This gate had been closed for a while, making it really hard for helpers, especially those trying to bring food and medicine to the northern part of Gaza where many people were suffering from hunger.
The United Nations helpers asked for this gate to be opened so they could bring more help.
On Wednesday, the people in charge, called COGAT, said they have not only opened the gate but will keep it open all the time, just like another gate in the south.
This means more trucks with help can now go into northern Gaza, which is very good news for the people who desperately need it.
The aid will still need to pass security checks before it enters Gaza and then be given to the UN to distribute.
Israel has permanently reopened the Zikim crossing to allow humanitarian aid trucks into northern Gaza.
COGAT, the Israeli military body overseeing aid, announced the reopening on Wednesday.
The UN and international aid organizations had requested the crossing's reopening to address famine conditions in the north.
The Zikim crossing is a crucial access point for aid to Gaza's hard-hit northern region.
Aid entering through Zikim will undergo Israeli security checks before being dispatched by the UN.
