Harvard Student Group Backs Delhi Protests Over Voter Rolls

A youth-led group called the Cockroach Janta Party planned a protest in New Delhi.

The protesters wanted changes to election rules and the chief election official to resign.

They said changes to voter lists might be unfair.

The Election Commission said the changes were a regular way to remove names of people who had died or were not eligible to vote.

It denied that politics influenced the process.

Security forces stopped the march, and hundreds of people were detained.

Some were released by the next day, but police did not say how many people were detained altogether.

A student group at Harvard Kennedy School supported the protesters and called for people it considered unjustly detained to be released.

The UN human rights office also raised concerns, while India's mission in Geneva rejected its criticism.
