Report Finds Lula’s Top Donors Mostly Hold State Jobs

A Brazilian newspaper studied people who gave money directly to President Lula’s campaign.

It found that most of the biggest individual donors worked for the government or state-owned companies.

Fifty-seven of 76 donors had such jobs.

Together, they gave 425,000 reais in money or services.

This was more than the campaign collected through crowdfunding.

The campaign said the donations were voluntary and followed election rules.

Several government offices also denied asking employees to give money.

An election-law expert said the donations alone do not prove wrongdoing.

He said there could be a legal problem if officials were pressured or forced.
