Muzaffarabad Protests Postpone Assembly Polls, Spark Crackdown and Arrests
In Muzaffarabad, people were upset about how the local elections are run.
They blocked roads and put big rocks on the streets to stop the vote for one seat.
Because of this, the election for that seat was moved to August 4.
The protests are about 12 seats that are reserved for refugees who left India in 1947.
The locals want to have their own representatives.
The Pakistani government says the seats are protected by the constitution.
Police arrested some protest leaders and stopped rallies in other cities.
The next part of the elections will happen in Poonch on August 10.
Protesters in Muzaffarabad blocked roads and hills, forcing the postponement of the LA-27 assembly seat election to August 4.
The protests target the 12 reserved assembly seats for Kashmiri refugees, which locals say deny them political representation.
Pakistan’s government defends the seats as constitutionally protected, while the local population demands greater autonomy and resource sharing.
Police have arrested pro-Kashmir activists, including Senator Mushtaq Ahmad, and detained protesters in Lahore and Islamabad.
The third phase of the PoK assembly elections will take place in Poonch division on August 10.
