TRAI Weighs Callback Access for Bank and Insurance Calls

TRAI Weighs Callback Access for Bank and Insurance Calls

Banks and insurance companies use special phone numbers beginning with 1600 to call customers.

These calls can be about payments, services or transactions.

Right now, customers cannot call the same number back.

Banks want a callback option so customers can ask questions or continue a conversation.

Telecom companies are studying whether this is technically possible.

They worry that the change could reduce use of 1800 toll-free numbers, which are an important business for them.

The regulator is also concerned about making these calls trustworthy and reducing fraud.

No final decision has been announced yet.
