Assam's Golden Silk Sarees Cost Rs 85k to 5L
In Assam, India, there's a special kind of silk called Muga, which is golden and very strong.
It's made in a place called Sualkuchi, where many skilled weavers work.
These weavers create beautiful sarees and other clothes from this silk.
The sarees are very expensive, costing between Rs 85,000 and Rs 5,00,000.
The silk is so special that it shines more as it gets older and can last for over 150 years.
Most of these silk products are sold to other countries like Japan, the United States, and many in Europe.
The weavers face some challenges, like taking care of the silkworms and finding the right trees for them to eat.
The government is helping by starting a special program called 'Muga Mission' to support the silk industry.
Muga silk, known as 'Golden Silk of Assam', is exclusive to Assam and is valued for its endurance and distinctive sheen.
The price of pure Muga silk Mekhela chadors ranges from Rs 85,000 to Rs 5,00,000 depending on the design.
Assam is the only place in India that produces all four recognized silk varieties: Muga, Eri, Mulberry, and Tussar.
Sualkuchi, a village in Assam, is one of the world's largest weaving villages with 12,000 handlooms producing around 3 lakh sq m of silk fabric annually.
The Assam government is actively pursuing the 'Muga Mission' initiative to enhance the Muga silk industry, focusing on the cultivation of Som-Soalu trees and the training of weavers.
