Assam Leads India in Sharpest Decline of Child Marriages
A new report shows child marriages have dropped sharply in Assam, India, far exceeding the national average.
The state saw a big drop in the last three years due to strong laws, arrests, and government support, including programs like Nijut Moina 2.0.
The report, based on data from April 2022 to March 2025, highlighted legal action as a key factor.
Most people know about the laws, with TV and NGOs providing information.
The report recommends registering all marriages and having a national day against child marriage to continue the progress.
Assam recorded an 84% drop in child marriages among girls and 91% among boys.
The report was presented at a UN General Assembly side event.
Legal action, including arrests, is identified as an effective tool.
