6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Taiwan

6.1 Magnitude Earthquake Shakes Taiwan

A strong earthquake happened in Taiwan on Wednesday, December 24.

It was a 6.0 or 6.1 magnitude earthquake, which is quite powerful.

The earthquake was not very deep, about 10 to 11.9 kilometers below the surface.

It happened in a place called Taitung County, but it also shook buildings in the capital city, Taipei.

Taiwan gets a lot of earthquakes because it's near where two big pieces of the Earth's surface meet.

The earthquake didn't cause any damage that we know of yet.

But in the past, Taiwan has had very bad earthquakes.

One in 2016 killed over 100 people, and another one in 1999 killed more than 2,000 people.

So, even though this one didn't cause any damage, it's important for people to be prepared.

Some products fell from supermarket shelves in Taitung, but there were no reports of damage to the island's transport networks.

The earthquake was not strong enough to require the evacuation of factories, including those of the major chipmaker TSMC.
