Siliguri Orders 30-Day Hotel Fire Safety Audit After Fatal Fires
Two serious hotel fires in Tarapith and Calcutta killed at least 18 people this week.
Because of this, officials in Siliguri are checking whether businesses are safe from fires.
The checks will last for 30 days.
Fire officials, police, city officials and electricity officials will work together.
They will inspect hotels, restaurants, shopping malls and other large buildings.
A business that breaks the rules can be closed immediately.
It can reopen only after fixing the problems.
Officials also told parents to stop minors from riding motorcycles and scooters.
A joint team will inspect Siliguri hotels, eateries, malls and commercial complexes for 30 days.
The audit will involve fire services, civic authorities, police and the state electricity distribution company.
Establishments with safety irregularities may be sealed until they correct the violations.
Tourism minister Shankar Ghosh inspected fire arrangements and licences at several Station Feeder Road businesses.
The Greater Siliguri Hotelier Welfare Association issued mandatory fire safety guidelines to its members.
