US Plans Largest-Ever Visa Revocation Targeting Asylum Applicants

US Plans Largest-Ever Visa Revocation Targeting Asylum Applicants

The US government plans to review some business and tourist visas.

The visas belong to people who entered the country as visitors and later asked for asylum.

Asylum is a process for people who fear danger in their home country to request protection.

The plan could affect as many as 200,000 people, but the final number is not known.

It would focus on B1 and B2 visas issued from 2016 through 2026.

Officials say some visitors may be using these visas to stay permanently instead of returning home.

Losing a visa would not automatically mean being deported right away.

Critics say a person’s situation can change after entering the country and that each asylum claim should be considered fairly.
