Protein bars and powders safety: experts explain third-party testing

Some people worry that protein bars and powders might not be safe to eat.

A nutritionist named Layla Al-Naif said that many of these products contain tiny bits of heavy metals, toxins, and pesticides.

She said that if the package doesn't say a product was "third-party tested," it probably wasn't tested at all.

A health expert named Anshul Singh said her worry is understandable.

He explained that ingredients like whey, soy, and rice protein can soak up tiny amounts of these substances from the soil.

But he also said that good companies do their own careful testing.

"Third-party tested" means an outside laboratory checked the product to make sure the label is correct and that there are no harmful chemicals or germs inside.

Not having that stamp does not mean a product is bad, says Singh.

Still, experts say it's best to eat real foods like eggs, milk, fish, and beans for protein most of the time, and only use bars and powders when you are busy.
