New Patel–Dhillon Classification System Developed for Ankle Malunion
Imagine a bone in your ankle that healed crooked after it broke.
This is called ankle malunion.
A doctor named Dr. Patel created a new way to describe all the different ways an ankle bone can heal crooked.
He calls it the Patel-Dhillon classification.
This helps other doctors figure out the best way to fix the crooked bone.
Sometimes they might fuse the joint, which stops movement but stops pain.
Other times, they can try to fix the bone so the joint can still move.
This new system helps doctors choose the right fix to keep the ankle working as well as possible.
Dr. Sandeep Patel of PGI Chandigarh has developed the Patel–Dhillon Classification for ankle malunion.
This is the first comprehensive system to classify all types of ankle malunions.
Ankle malunion occurs when ankle fractures heal in an improper position, causing pain and instability.
The classification assists surgeons in assessing deformities and selecting optimal corrective procedures.
The aim is to improve clinical outcomes by promoting joint preservation through corrective osteotomies where feasible.
