Hassan DC Issues Notice to SP Over Ganesh Immersion
A Ganesh idol was immersed in Devi Kere, a pond in Hassan, on October 3.
The Deputy Commissioner said this happened without permission.
Officials had banned immersion there because they were concerned that Plaster of Paris could pollute the pond.
The pond is considered religiously important by people in the region.
The Deputy Commissioner sent a notice to the police superintendent about the permission given.
She said the notice was about administration, not a personal fight.
She also recalled a past procession tragedy in which 11 people were struck by a truck.
A local lawmaker declined to comment and joked that he might receive a notice too.
Deputy Commissioner K.S. Lathakumari said a notice was served on Hassan Superintendent of Police Shubhanwita over permission for immersion at Devi Kere.
The DC said a ban had been issued to protect the pond’s sanctity after the Tahsildar reported that Plaster of Paris idols could pollute it.
According to the DC, organisers immersed a Ganesh idol at the pond on October 3 without prior approval or details about its size and materials.
Lathakumari said the notice was administrative and denied any personal dispute or “cold war” with the police department.
She cited a previous immersion-related procession tragedy in Hassan in which a speeding truck struck 11 people; MLA H.D. Revanna declined to comment and joked that he might also receive a notice.
