Haryana given 4 weeks to reply in PIL against retired DGP heading complaints authority
The Punjab and Haryana High Court has given the Haryana government four weeks to respond to a legal challenge against the appointment of a retired police chief as the head of a complaints authority.
The court warned that any further delay would mean the state loses its chance to respond.
The legal challenge argues that the appointment is illegal because the Supreme Court has said these authorities should be headed by retired judges, not retired police officers.
The state has been slow to respond, and the court is concerned about this delay.
The next hearing is scheduled for late February 2026.
The Punjab and Haryana High Court gave the Haryana government four weeks to file its reply in a PIL challenging the appointment of a retired DGP as chairperson of the State Police Complaints Authority.
The court warned that any further delay would forfeit the State's right to respond.
The PIL argues that the appointment is illegal as the Supreme Court directed that such authorities should be headed by retired High Court judges.
The current chairperson, a retired Haryana DGP, was appointed under a diluted provision of the state law.
The next hearing is scheduled for February 26, 2026.
