India's Natural Gas Imports Decline Amidst Weak Production
From April to August of the fiscal year 2025-26, India spent less money on importing natural gas, about $5.8 billion, which is an 11% decrease compared to the same period last year.
This is because India imported less natural gas overall.
Even though imports went down, India still relies heavily on imported gas to meet its needs, importing about half of its total gas consumption.
Domestic gas production is also down slightly.
Experts predict that demand will continue to grow in the coming year, but imports will still be needed to fulfill it.
India's natural gas import bill decreased by 11% to $5.8 billion from April to August FY26.
LNG import volume declined by 12.6% during the same period.
Natural gas consumption in India decreased by 7.8% from April to August FY26.
Domestic natural gas production declined by 3% from April to August FY26.
India's import dependence on natural gas remains high, at approximately 50%.
