NEP 2020: India's School Education Reforms
The National Education Policy 2020 (NEP 2020) in India aims to improve school education by making several changes.
It suggests a new structure for schooling, with children starting at age 3 and finishing at 18.
The policy wants all children to learn to read and write by the end of 5th grade by 2025, and it aims to provide free and good quality education to all children by 2030.
Schools will focus more on understanding and practical skills rather than just memorizing facts.
Teachers will be better trained, and there will be more emphasis on learning Indian languages and vocational skills.
The policy also wants to make sure that all children, including those from disadvantaged backgrounds, can access good education.
However, the implementation of these reforms is moving slowly, and there is a need for better coordination and awareness among stakeholders.
NEP 2020 proposes a new school structure of 5+3+3+4, starting at age 3 and ending at 18.
Key milestones include achieving foundational literacy by 2025 and 100% gross enrolment ratio by 2035.
Education up to 5th standard will be in the mother tongue or regional language.
The policy shifts focus from input-based to outcome-based education, emphasizing understanding and practical applications.
Teachers will undergo a new 4-year integrated program, and the pupil-teacher ratio will be 30:1, with 25:1 in disadvantaged areas.
