Why Indian Prepaid SIMs May Stop Working In Ladakh
Ladakh has special rules for mobile phone connections.
A prepaid SIM from another part of India may stop working when you arrive.
A postpaid SIM can usually work under the same rules.
This restriction applies regardless of which company provides the SIM.
However, even postpaid phones may lose signal in remote places.
Leh generally has better internet than rural areas.
Travellers can change their SIM to postpaid or get a local connection.
They should download maps and important travel information before leaving areas with reliable internet.
Prepaid SIM cards issued outside Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh generally do not work in Ladakh.
Postpaid connections can work, although coverage remains limited or absent in remote areas.
The restriction applies across service providers and is linked to telecom and security rules.
Travellers can convert their number to postpaid or obtain a local Ladakh connection.
Ladakh Police advises visitors to keep maps, documents and other essentials available offline.
