Gold and Silver Surge on Fed Rate Cut Hopes
Gold and silver prices went up a lot on December 16-17, 2024, because people think the US Federal Reserve might cut interest rates soon.
This happened after a report showed that the US added more jobs than expected in November, but the unemployment rate also went up.
When the US dollar is weak, people often buy gold and silver as safe investments.
Silver prices also went up a lot, even higher than the price of crude oil for the first time in 40 years.
Experts say silver prices could keep going up because it's used in many new technologies like solar energy and electric cars.
Meanwhile, the stock market had a mixed day, with the Dow Jones falling over 300 points, but the Nasdaq recovered slightly thanks to Tesla's record high.
Gold prices on MCX rose ₹1,150 per 10g due to safe-haven demand and expectations of a Fed rate cut.
US added 64,000 jobs in November, exceeding forecasts, but unemployment rose to 4.6%.
Gold futures reached an intraday high of ₹1,35,496 per 10g, with spot gold at $4,337 per ounce.
Silver prices surged nearly ₹1,485 per kg, with a 130% gain in 2024, nearly double gold's gain, and hit a record high of ₹2,06,111 per kg on MCX.
US dollar index hovered near two-month lows, prompting investors to seek safe-haven assets.
