Govt. Employees Can Now Access Both Pension Schemes
Good news for government employees!
They can now have accounts in both the Unified Pension Scheme (UPS) and the National Pension System (NPS).
Think of UPS as a traditional, set pension plan where the government and employees contribute a fixed amount each month.
NPS is a more flexible plan where you can invest and potentially get higher returns.
This update means employees who are part of UPS can still also join the NPS voluntarily to have access to different types of investments.
This allows them to save more, earn more, and have a better plan for their retirement!
Central government employees can now have both UPS and NPS accounts.
The PFRDA clarified that dual participation is allowed under the NPS All Citizen Model.
The UPS offers a defined benefit pension scheme.
NPS provides flexibility and market-linked returns.
The deadline to opt into the UPS has been extended to November 30, 2025.
