Centre Approves Chana Purchase in Karnataka
The central government has approved the purchase of 1.013 lakh tonnes of chana (bengal gram) at a minimum support price (MSP) of ₹5875 per tonne for the rabi marketing season 2026-27 in Karnataka.
The total value of the procurement is ₹595.37 crore.
Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chauhan urged the Karnataka government to fully procure the approved quantity to support farmers.
He criticized the state government for not fully procuring approved quantities of tur (red gram) and totapuri mangoes in previous seasons.
The minister also clarified that the new VB-G RAM G scheme aims to transform rural employment by guaranteeing 125 days of work, focusing on productive asset creation.
Meanwhile, the acreage under bengal gram has increased by 5% during the ongoing rabi sowing season, led by states like Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, and Karnataka, while Maharashtra has seen a decline.
