Mumbai Mounted Police Shift From Ceremonial To Ganeshotsav Duty
Mumbai’s police have a group of horses that can help officers manage crowds.
The horses will be used during Ganeshotsav, when many people gather for idol immersions.
They will patrol beaches and other places where cars cannot easily go.
The 22 horses will work in shifts at different immersion points.
The horses have trained for almost six months.
The police also practiced at Juhu beach in May.
The government approved more jobs and money to support the unit.
The unit has had problems before, including horse illnesses and expensive care.
Mumbai’s mounted police unit will deploy 22 horses at beach immersion points during Ganeshotsav.
The horses will work rotationally where crowds and sand prevent vehicles from entering.
The unit, restarted in 2024, has undergone nearly six months of training, including a Juhu beach session in May.
The Maharashtra government approved 70 new horse-rider posts and Rs 1.27 crore in funding for the unit.
