Japan Plans Major Visa Fee Hikes
Japan is planning to increase the fees for various visas, including permanent residency and visa status changes.
The current fee for permanent residency is 10,000 yen, but it may soon cost 100,000 yen.
The government says this will help them support programs for foreign residents and deal with issues like overtourism.
They also want to make the fees similar to those in countries like the US and UK.
The money collected will be used for processing applications, language programs, and removing people who stay illegally.
This comes as Japan has seen a rise in both foreign residents and illegal overstays.
Japan plans to increase the permanent residency visa fee from 10,000 yen to 100,000 yen.
The fee for changing visa status or reissuing a visa for one year or longer may rise by about 40,000 yen.
The higher charges aim to support multiculturalism initiatives and align with Western countries' fees.
The government expects to collect tens of billions of yen to fund application processing, language programs, and removal of illegal residents.
Japan has seen a rise in foreign residents, reaching 3.95 million, and over 70,000 illegal overstayers in July.
