Why H1N1, H3N2 and COVID-19 Infections Are Rising

Why H1N1, H3N2 and COVID-19 Infections Are Rising

Some viruses enter the body through the nose and upper airways.

These include influenza viruses and SARS-CoV-2, which causes COVID-19.

The body has a first layer of protection called local or mucosal immunity.

This protection helps stop viruses before they cause an infection.

However, that protection can become weaker fairly quickly.

This does not mean the immune system has completely forgotten the virus.

A virus may then begin an infection before the body's deeper defenses fully respond.

This helps explain why infections involving H1N1, H3N2 and COVID-19 are being discussed as they rise.
