Bhadohi Renamed Sant Ravidas Nagar for 650th Birth Anniversary
Uttar Pradesh’s chief minister, Yogi Adityanath, said that the district of Bhadohi will be renamed Sant Ravidas Nagar.
He made the announcement on July 29, 2024, during a party event in Varanasi.
The change is to celebrate the 650th birthday of the saint Sant Guru Ravidas.
The government says naming places after saints helps bring people together.
They also plan to protect statues of saints and other social reformers.
The renaming reverses a 2014 decision that had changed the district’s name back to Bhadohi.
Some politicians from the opposition party say the move will divide people.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath announced Bhadohi district will be renamed Sant Ravidas Nagar on July 29, 2024.
The renaming coincides with the 650th birth anniversary of Sant Guru Ravidas and reverses a 2014 decision by the Samajwadi Party.
Adityanath said the move reflects the government’s commitment to honouring social reformers and to unite society, criticizing opponents who divide people.
The announcement was made during the launch of the BJP’s ‘Samrasta Sankalp Abhiyan’ outreach program in Varanasi, attended by several state and union ministers.
The government also pledged to install protective canopies over statues of Sant Ravidas, Maharishi Valmiki, B R Ambedkar and others, and to name public institutions after social reformers.
