Himachal Government Schools Closed August 17 for Compensatory Holiday
On August 17, 2026, all government schools in Himachal Pradesh will stay closed.
This is a special holiday just for one day.
It is happening because the students and teachers had to go to school on August 15.
August 15 is India's Independence Day.
Schools held celebrations and programs to mark the day.
Students and teachers took part at school, subdivision, district, and state levels.
The Chief Minister of the state, Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu, asked for the holiday.
Later, the education department said schools would be closed on August 17.
Private schools do not have to close on that day.
They can choose their own holiday if they want one.
All government schools in Himachal Pradesh will remain closed on August 17, 2026.
The holiday compensates students and teachers for attending school on August 15 for Independence Day celebrations.

The Directorate of School Education confirmed the holiday in a notification issued late Saturday evening.
