Sugar Futures Slump as Traders Assess India’s Duty-Free Imports

Sugar Futures Slump as Traders Assess India’s Duty-Free Imports

Sugar prices fell after India announced it could bring in raw sugar without import taxes.

The government allowed imports of as much as 1 million tons through October 31.

Traders studied the policy and decided India might import closer to 500,000 tons.

That expectation reduced fears of a major shortage.

Prices had climbed the previous week because India’s supplies were tight.

Traders were also worried about unusual El Niño weather and problems processing sugar in Brazil.

Some analysts said the policy would help sugar shipments already traveling to India.

It could also help mills that can refine the sugar before the next harvest begins.
