MGNREGA Faces Corruption and Irregularities
The government did a big check on a program called MGNREGA, which gives jobs to people in rural areas.
They found lots of problems, like fake projects, money being stolen, and payments made to people who had passed away.
Some states had more issues than others.
The government says they have fixed many problems with new rules, but people on the ground say there are still issues.
The check found that over Rs 300 crore was misused, but most of that money has been recovered.
The government is working to make sure the program helps people as it should.
A vigilance audit by the Ministry of Rural Development found widespread financial and administrative irregularities in MGNREGA, amounting to over Rs 300 crore.
The audit covered 55 districts across 25 states and Union Territories, identifying over 11 lakh instances of irregularities.
Common issues included fake projects, engagement of contractors, and payments to deceased individuals.
Post-2014 reforms, such as Aadhaar linking and geo-tagging, have increased transparency, but ground reports suggest ongoing challenges.
The government maintains that systemic reforms have largely eliminated corruption, but local issues continue to undermine the program's objectives.
