Amazon launches Ring Neighbours to replace neighbourhood WhatsApp groups
Amazon is bringing a new Ring community service to the United Kingdom.
It is called Neighbours and will work inside the Ring app.
People can use it even if they do not own a Ring camera.
Users will see posts from people living nearby.
The posts can be about safety, community issues or missing pets.
A dog-search feature can connect missing-pet reports with some participating Ring cameras.
The service will have rules and be checked by artificial intelligence and human moderators.
Some features involving police and official organisations will be delayed in Britain.
The main question is whether this will be more useful than a busy neighbourhood WhatsApp group.
Ring will launch its free Neighbours service in the United Kingdom on October 21.
People can use the service without owning a Ring doorbell or security camera.
Users can create local feeds covering areas between 0.1 and five miles from their address.
Posts about safety, community matters and lost pets will be moderated by artificial intelligence and human reviewers.
Police footage requests and verified-organisation posts will not initially be available in Britain.

Local usefulness
Privacy and surveillance concerns
Focused alternative to group chats
Local usefulness
Ring says a location-based feed could reduce the volume and disorder of large neighbourhood WhatsApp groups by concentrating on matters affecting nearby residents.
Privacy and surveillance concerns
Residents may see the service as another platform to monitor, rather than a solution to the problem of having too many community messages.
Camera-supported missing-pet searches
Local usefulness
Search Party for Dogs could help locate a missing dog by allowing eligible participating cameras to identify a possible match and letting owners choose whether to share footage.
Privacy and surveillance concerns
Connecting community posts with cameras raises questions about who can access recordings and how surveillance fits into neighbourhood life.
Police access to footage
Local usefulness
Ring’s Community Requests feature could allow police to seek relevant camera footage after an incident, with sharing remaining voluntary.
Privacy and surveillance concerns
The feature is privacy-sensitive because it could involve law-enforcement requests for footage, which is why it will not initially launch in Britain.
