Brazilians Protest Effort to Reduce Bolsonaro's Sentence
Thousands of people in Brazil protested on Sunday because they are upset about a new law that might make the punishment for former President Jair Bolsonaro and his supporters much shorter.
Bolsonaro was sentenced to 27 years in jail for trying to overturn the results of the 2022 election, but a new bill could reduce his sentence to just over two years.
The protesters, who included teachers, famous singers, and many other people, want the government to keep the original punishment.
They believe that Bolsonaro and his supporters should be held accountable for their actions.
The current president, Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, is expected to veto the bill if it passes the Senate, but the final decision could end up in the Supreme Court.
Thousands protested in major cities against a bill to reduce Bolsonaro's 27-year sentence to 2 years.
The bill, passed by the lower house, could also soften penalties for Bolsonaro's supporters who stormed government buildings.
Protests were led by social groups, artists, and political parties, including famous singer Caetano Veloso.
Bolsonaro remains barred from office for 30 years, even if the bill passes.
President Lula is expected to veto the bill if it passes the Senate, with potential Supreme Court challenges.
