Smart Cities Mission: Expenditure High, Lasting Impact Low
Imagine a big project to make cities better with new technology and services.
This project, called Smart Cities Mission, spent a lot of money to do this.
The government and states paid most of the cost.
But instead of new improvements, some of the money went into upgrading older features.
Some projects were delayed, and the plans changed because of unexpected events.
Now the project is over, but some cities are finding it hard to pay for all of the upgrades and upkeep.
The Smart Cities Mission aimed to create sustainable and citizen-friendly cities.
The program, with an initial budget of Rs 2 lakh crore, has ended.
Cumulative spending reached Rs 1.64 lakh crore by March 2024.
A significant portion of funds came from the Central and state governments.
Many projects have seen delays, and the mission failed to meet its goals for private sector investment.
