BJP’s Dinesh Arya Files Nomination for Uttarakhand Rajya Sabha Seat
Dinesh Arya has been chosen by the BJP to run for a seat in India’s Rajya Sabha from Uttarakhand.
He filed his papers on the last day nominations could be submitted.
The election is planned for October 16.
The BJP has many more seats in the state Assembly than the other parties, so the report says Arya is very likely to win.
Arya is from the Kumaon region and is a Scheduled Caste leader.
The other three Rajya Sabha representatives from Uttarakhand are currently from Garhwal.
The BJP’s choice is described as a way to give Kumaon more representation and to consider caste balance before next year’s state election.
Congress has criticized the BJP over a purification ceremony held after a rally in Haldwani.
Dinesh Arya filed his nomination for Uttarakhand’s lone Rajya Sabha seat on the final day for nominations.
The election is scheduled for October 16; the seat is currently held by BJP member Naresh Bansal, whose term ends November 25.
The BJP has 47 of the 70 state Assembly seats, making Arya’s election virtually certain, according to the report.
Arya is a Scheduled Caste leader from Kumaon; the state’s three Rajya Sabha seats are currently represented by leaders from Garhwal.
The report links his selection to regional and caste representation ahead of next year’s Assembly elections, while noting Congress criticism over a Haldwani ceremony.
