Cauvery Water Dispute Intensifies Amid Severe Regional Rainfall Deficit

The Cauvery is a river shared by Karnataka and Tamil Nadu.

When there is little rain, both states have less water.

This year, the reservoirs in the Cauvery basin are only partly full.

Tamil Nadu opened the gates of the Mettur reservoir to provide water for farmers.

A water-management authority told Karnataka to send 9,000 cusecs to Tamil Nadu for 15 days.

Karnataka said it was following that direction.

Tamil Nadu said it also needed water that had not been released earlier and asked the Supreme Court for help.

The article says both states should agree on a fair plan for sharing water during dry years.
