Suvendu Adhikari’s Chinmoy Krishna Remarks Spark Bengal Identity Clash

Suvendu Adhikari said Bengali Hindus need a homeland and connected this idea to the case of Bangladeshi monk Chinmoy Krishna Das.

He said Bengal’s connection with India protected Bengali Hindus during Partition.

He also remembered that his mother’s family had to leave what is now Bangladesh because they were Hindu.

The CPI(M) criticized him and the BJP for using different standards in Bangladesh and India.

It pointed to Umar Khalid, who is also in jail in India.

Adhikari blamed earlier Left and TMC governments for moving Bengal away from Hindu traditions.

He said this year’s Durga Puja would follow traditional rules.

CPI(M) leaders said politicians should not decide what people read or how they celebrate festivals.

The disagreement has become part of a larger fight about religion, history and minority rights in Bengal.
