Journalist’s Letter Helped Bring Gandhi to Champaran Farmers

Journalist’s Letter Helped Bring Gandhi to Champaran Farmers

A long time ago, farmers in Champaran were forced by British officials to grow indigo instead of food crops.

This made life very difficult for them.

A journalist named Pir Muhammed Munis wrote about their problems in Hindi newspapers.

He and a farmer named Rajkumar Shukla sent letters asking Mahatma Gandhi to help.

Gandhi visited Champaran in April 1917.

He organized volunteers, schools, surveys, protests, and other efforts for the farmers.

The movement helped end the forced growing of indigo through a law passed in 1918.

Munis kept working for farmers and Indian independence afterward.

He was jailed more than once but continued his activism until his death in 1949.
