China Warns of Consequences Over Taiwan at Pacific Forum

China Warns of Consequences Over Taiwan at Pacific Forum

Taiwan attended part of a meeting for Pacific countries in Palau.

China was angry because it says Taiwan is part of China.

A Chinese envoy said there would always be “consequences,” but he did not explain what that meant.

He also said the words were not a threat.

Taiwan’s foreign minister was invited to meetings and events held alongside the forum.

Several reports described Taiwan as a development partner, while China said Taiwan was not a qualified partner.

Australia and New Zealand said the Pacific group should decide who attends its meetings.

Several Pacific leaders were absent and sent ministers instead.

Some officials questioned whether outside pressure might have influenced those absences, but Australia said leaders could have had many reasons for not traveling.
