India's Tax Revenue Growth Slows in H1 FY26 Amid Lower Collections
Imagine the government is like a household trying to collect money to pay its bills.
In the first half of this year, the money the government collected from taxes didn't grow as much as it usually does, and in some cases, it even went down a little.
They expected taxes to grow by a lot, like 13% or more, but it only grew by about 2-3%.
This happened with both taxes from people and companies (direct taxes) and taxes on things we buy (indirect taxes) like goods and services.
Things like income tax and GST didn't grow as much as planned.
One reason might be that the overall economy isn't growing as fast as expected, and changes to tax rules might also be affecting collections.
However, the government also gets money from other sources, like dividends from the central bank, which have helped.
They also spent less on some things, which helped keep the government's total debt (fiscal deficit) from getting too big, though it is a bit higher than last year at this time.
Net tax revenue in India declined by 2.8% in H1 FY26 compared to the previous year.
Gross tax revenue grew by only 2.8% in H1 FY26, significantly below the budgeted annual growth estimates.
Direct tax collections rose by 3.1%, and indirect tax collections by 2.8%, both falling short of projections.
GST growth was 3.2% against an estimate of 14.2%, while Customs duties declined by 5.2%.
Despite revenue slowdowns, fiscal deficit remained managed due to higher non-tax revenues and controlled revenue expenditure.
