Trump in South Korea for Trade Talks Amid North Korea Missile Test
The leaders of the United States and South Korea met to talk about important issues.
One big topic was a trade agreement, where South Korea promised to invest a lot of money in the U.S. The U.S. wants this money upfront, but South Korea prefers to give it through loans because paying all at once could be too much for their economy.
They also talked about defense, with the U.S. asking South Korea to pay more for American soldiers stationed there.
Before President Trump arrived, North Korea tested a missile, but Trump downplayed its importance, focusing instead on trade talks with South Korea and an upcoming meeting with China's leader.
The leaders also touched upon immigration and peace on the Korean peninsula.
U.S. President Donald Trump arrived in Gyeongju, South Korea, for talks with President Lee Jae Myung.
A key focus of the discussions was the unresolved trade agreement, particularly South Korea's $350 billion investment pledge.
Talks addressed defense costs and U.S. immigration laws concerning South Korean workers.
North Korea test-fired a nuclear-capable cruise missile shortly before Trump's arrival, though he dismissed its significance.
Trump also anticipated a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping to discuss a potential trade truce.
