Calcutta High Court defers Abhishek Banerjee's plea
Abhishek Banerjee, a member of parliament from the Trinamool Congress party, asked the Calcutta High Court for protection from police action in eight different cases filed against him.
The court decided to postpone the hearing until July 30.
Abhishek's lawyer argued that the court should protect him, just as it had protected Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari in similar cases.
However, the judge said each case must be considered separately.
The West Bengal government also objected to Abhishek's request, saying that one petition cannot challenge multiple cases.
The court will hear the matter again on July 30.
The Calcutta High Court adjourned the hearing on Abhishek Banerjee's petition seeking protection from coercive action in eight FIRs until July 30.
Abhishek's lawyer argued for protection, citing a previous case where Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari was granted protection in 17 FIRs.
Justice Bhattacharyya maintained that each case must be considered separately and Adhikari cannot be cited as an example.
The West Bengal government objected to Abhishek's prayer, stating that a single petition cannot challenge several FIRs.
The court directed Abhishek's counsel to bring to the notice of the court if any action is taken against him in the meantime.
