Chamoli Authorities Begin Debris Removal After Dhauli Ganga Lake Formation
Imagine a river flowing along, but suddenly a big pile of mud and rocks from a past flood got in the way.
This pile was so big that it started to make a little lake behind it, stopping most of the river's water from flowing.
People in the area noticed this and decided to send in big machines, like bulldozers, to push the mud and rocks aside.
They want to make sure the river can flow freely again, just like it did before.
A scientist also visited and said this is a problem they need to fix quickly.
Debris removal has commenced in Chamoli's Niti Valley to clear a temporary lake formed on the Dhauli Ganga river.
The lake was caused by debris accumulation near the Tamak drain following a monsoon flood.
The temporary lake is approximately 300 meters long, 60 meters wide, and 3 meters deep.
Currently, only one-fourth of the Dhauli Ganga's water is flowing through the obstruction.
Authorities are working to increase the water flow to 30 meters, from its current 15 meters.
