RBI Schedules October 2026 Premature Redemption for Four SGB Tranches
Some people who own older Sovereign Gold Bonds can ask to receive their money before the bonds’ full eight-year term ends.
The Reserve Bank of India has listed four bonds that can be redeemed in October 2026.
Each bond has a different date for submitting the request.
The earliest deadline is 5 October 2026.
Investors should check their bond’s series and issue date in their demat account or holding statement.
The amount paid is linked to recent gold prices, not necessarily the original purchase price.
This early redemption process is different from selling the bond on a stock exchange.
Investors should also note that the tax exemption may now depend on keeping the bond until its normal maturity date.
Four Sovereign Gold Bond tranches from 2019-20 and 2020-21 are eligible for premature redemption in October 2026.
Request deadlines are 5 October, 9 October, 19 October and 21 October, depending on the tranche.
The redemption facility is available after five years, but only during RBI-specified windows.
Redemption value is based on the average closing price of 999-purity gold over the previous three working days.
From 1 April 2026, capital-gains exemption generally requires holding an SGB continuously until maturity.
