JNU Protest Sparks Controversy Over Slogans
Students at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi held a protest on January 5, 2026, to mark the anniversary of a violent incident on campus.
During the protest, some students allegedly raised slogans against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah, which the university administration found objectionable.
The administration sought an FIR and initiated an internal inquiry, claiming the slogans were inflammatory and violated the university's code of conduct.
The BJP and other political leaders condemned the incident, alleging it reflected an 'Urban Naxal mindset.'
The saint community also expressed anger, demanding legal action and even suggesting the university be renamed to purge 'anti-social' elements.
The JNUSU, however, claimed the protest was to remember the 2020 attacks on JNU and denied that the slogans were threats, alleging that the university's response was part of an organized attempt to defame the university and persecute students.
