Central African Court Allows Ex-PMs to Challenge Touadera in Election
In the Central African Republic, the top election court made a decision about who can run for president.
Some people tried to stop two former prime ministers, who used to be the boss of the government before the president, from running.
They said these former prime ministers were also citizens of other countries, like France or Congo.
But the court said there wasn't enough proof for that.
So now, the current president, who has been in charge since 2016, will have seven people running against him.
One of these people is running for president for the third time.
The United Nations has also agreed to help keep the election safe for another year.
Central African Republic President Faustin-Archange Touadera will face seven candidates in the upcoming presidential election.
The country's highest election court, the Constitutional Council, approved all seven candidates, including two former prime ministers.
Challenges to the candidacies of former prime ministers Henri-Marie Dondra and Anicet-Georges Dologuele were dismissed due to insufficient evidence of dual citizenship.
Touadera, who has been president since 2016, is seeking a third term after term limits were removed.
The U.N. peacekeeping mission's mandate has been extended for a year to help secure the elections.
