India's Coal Power Output Drops, Renewable Energy Surges in May
In May, India used much less coal to make electricity, the biggest drop in five years.
This happened because people needed less electricity overall, and because India used more clean energy sources like solar and wind.
The cooler weather also played a part, as overall electricity use went down.
The amount of electricity made from natural gas also dropped a lot.
Renewable energy increased to a record level, showing that India is relying more on clean sources.
This change is also due to lower prices on both coal and LNG.
India's coal-fired electricity generation saw its biggest drop in five years in May.
Renewable energy output surged to a record high, increasing by 17.2%.
Overall electricity generation decreased by 5.3% year-on-year due to cooler temperatures.
Coal-fired power generation decreased 9.5% year-on-year to 113.3 billion kWh in May.
Natural gas-based generation fell sharply by 46.5% to 2.78 billion kWh.
